New Orleans Voodoo

by Craig Jordan

This is New Orleans in the shadows. Voodoo was brought to New Orleans during the African Diaspora and slavery. It is a combination of the traditional West African spirituality and the Catholic faith of French Louisiana plantation owners. The music combines elements from African drumming and European themes. The show begins with the drumming circles of Congo Square with the haunting melody of “The Saints go Marching In.” Mvt. 2 takes place in St. Louis No. 1 Cemetery at the tomb of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen. The show finishes with a second line down the streets of the French Quarter, to the hymn, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
